Our Story

Most companies say they started in a garage.

We started with an ironing board in India, a small table in Waterville, and two friends who believed they could build something better.

Before Standard Management existed, Brett and Srini were coworkers at athenahealth — one from Maine, one from India. One a thinker and coder, the other an operations guy who made ideas happen.

Years later, Srini had just been laid off…and that’s when Brett called:

“Hey, can you help me manage my rentals?”

It wasn’t perfect timing. Srini had already accepted a full-time Director role and Brett was juggling his own work. But they started anyway.

In the early days:

Srini worked from an ironing board because he didn’t even have a desk.

Brett worked from a tiny living-room table.

Srini had to learn Maine’s cultural nuances without ever having set foot there, while Brett taught him the small-town Maine way.

And all of this happened after hours, on nights, weekends, and between life responsibilities.

No plan.

No funding.

Just trust and teamwork.

Then came the early believers: after starting with Brett's own portfolio as well as his family and friends, the first person who believed in Standard Management's ability to support his own goals was Jim Murphy, who realized he needed management after getting a tenant call during family time. Then came Roger Andrews with 100 units. Word of mouth did the rest.

From just the two of them, the team grew to:

 10 people in the U.S.

 14 people in India

All starting from two makeshift desks on opposite sides of the world.

Today, Standard Management runs on the same values it started with: Show up, communicate clearly, treat every property like it matters, and do it all with honesty and heart.

This isn’t a corporate story.

It’s a Maine story — built from grit, trust, and friends who believed in doing things the right way.
